Nobantu's Restaurant

I’m Nick Hamman and I’m on a mission to find the best magwinya in South Africa — and I may have just found it at Nobantu’s Kitchen on the Grand Parade in Cape Town, which I’ve been told is the oldest isiXhosa restaurant in the city.
The Grand Parade, Cape Town’s oldest public square dating back to the 1600s, has evolved from a colonial military parade ground into a vibrant urban hub where food stalls serve up affordable, authentic Cape Town street cuisine that reflects the city’s rich cultural tapestry.
This magwinya, stuffed full with livers, cost me just R15 and was downright incredible. The livers were rich and velvety, soaking into the pillowy, golden dough with every bite — hearty, comforting, and ridiculously satisfying.
All in all, for everything I ate and a still water, I paid R120. They also do all the classics like mogodu, done differently to what I’m used to in Jozi but absolutely delicious, paired with pap and a side of veggies. Everything tasted like it was made with love by experts who know exactly what they’re doing.
I’d highly recommend checking out Nobantu’s Kitchen for yourself — I’ve left the details in the caption. Give my page a follow to tag along on more epic food adventures across South Africa, and let me know in the comments where I should go next!
