Rascals Pub
2 Meyer St Claremont
I’m Nick Hamman and SuperSportBet have challenged me to find the best sports bar in South Africa, so I’ve brought along veteran broadcaster Niel Andrews to try out iconic Rascals Pub and Grill in Kenilworth in Cape Town
The bar is famously a Manchester United Fan Club, and we were here to watch them take on Chelsea in The Premiere League at Stamford Bridge and try out their famous Curry Pizza!
To me, the makings of a great sports bar are a clear sense of history and memorabilia, a good view of the game wherever you look, locals as firmly planted in there sits as the draught taps are to the counters and of course, hearty, delicious pub food.
Going for a British classic of Bangers as Mash, a nervous Niel looked on as Manchester took an early lead – not ideal for this Tottenham supporter.
Intrigued by The Curry Pizza, I wanted to find out more from unapologetic Man U supporter and owner Colin Johannesen about the pub’s and his history.
The large pizza, which cost R140, was an ambitious beef curry that sat on top of a wood fried pizza, and I’ve got to say it exceeded expectations. In my experience, combo foods often compromise one of the two partners, but this was great curry on great pizza. It was hearty, filling, and best paired with cold beer and thrilling sport, which in this case saw a nail-biting finish ultimately pleasing my friend Niel
Rascals’ Pub definitely gets my stamp of approval, but if it’s not the best place to watch sports in South Africa, let me know where I’m going next
