Foresters Arms
52 Newlands Ave Newlands
I’m Nick Hamman and I’m looking for the best carvery in South Africa and we’re starting strong at the famous forries Sunday Carvery at Forresters Arms in Newlands: which has been going for over 100 years
A carvery is a dining style that grew out of the British Sunday roast, where freshly roasted meats are carved in front of guests and served with sides like potatoes, vegetables, and gravy. It became popular in pubs and hotels after World War II as an affordable, communal fixed-price meal and has since spread across the Commonwealth, including South Africa, as a warm and festive tradition.
The Foresters Arms, or Forries, began in 1852 when “The Cottage” in Newlands was raffled off and turned into a gathering spot for locals. By 1881 it had become one of the Cape’s first inns, serving travelers and forestry workers alongside the nearby breweries. Through the decades it passed between brewery barons and families before finally being bought outright in 1992 by Lorraine Epstein. Today it remains one of Cape Town’s most loved pubs, steeped in heritage and community spirit. The Sunday carvery is its signature—an abundant spread of roasts, vegetables, and trimmings that has become a weekly ritual for generations of Capetonians.
Crispy roast potatoes, creamed spinach, seasonal vegetables, roast beef and Yorkshire pudding
