Senegalese Canteen
89 Long St Cape Town City Centre
I’m Nick Hamman, and I just ate the best jollof rice I’ve ever had in South Africa—and in this video, I’m going to show you exactly where to find it.
It’s on Long Street in Cape Town, inside a building that houses several canteens catering to communities from Nigeria, Malawi, the Congo, and Senegal. There’s something special about spaces like this: they’re not trying to be trendy or “fusion”—they exist to feed people a taste of home. It’s here, at the Senegalese canteen, where you can enjoy traditional dishes, including (of course) jollof rice.
Their jollof is cooked directly in a deeply flavoured tomato base made with onions, garlic, peppers, and spices—so every grain absorbs the flavour as it cooks, rather than being topped with sauce afterwards. You can taste the patience in it: the rice isn’t just red, it’s layered. The balance of heat, sweetness, and savoury depth is what makes it feel like the real deal.
This is the kind of place where community members gather to eat—authentic, unfiltered, and proudly familiar. I had the privilege of visiting recently with my friends from Unexplored Cape Town (I’ve tagged them in this post), and it felt like being welcomed into a side of Cape Town that many people never get to see. Food hits differently when it’s shared, and this meal was all about that.
Together, we had a bowl of stewed vegetables, an incredible slow-cooked beef stew in a tomato-based sauce, and fried fish—proper communal eating, and everything tasted like it was made with care. Served with homemade mayonnaise and peri-peri sauce, and washed down with hibiscus, it was an experience I’d genuinely recommend you try for yourself.
