Moses Mabhida Stadium
44 Isaiah Ntshangase Rd Stamford Hill
I’m Nick Hamman and SuperSportBet have challenged me to find the best stadium food in South Africa and so today I’ve come to Moses Mabida Stadium in Durban KZN to watch the home team AmaZulu go head-to-head against the Orlando Pirates in an epic, nail biting Nedbank Cup Quarter-Finals. This sold-out game of 55000 strong brought immense gees, which undeniably builds a strong appetite, so I went in search of classic stadium food, together with local Durban comedian Akhil Maharaj. Going for R75, the meal of the day had all the trimmings you’d expect, chuck together with pap, beetroot, coleslaw, and chakalaka. While the food honestly lacked that special something, the portions were good, and the meat was well braai’d. The salads were fresh tasting, and the chakalaka had enough of a bite. With both AmaZulu and Pirates being nearly 100 years old, the sense of history and fierce loyalty inside the stadium is palpable and thrilling. While watching the game, which ultimately ended 4-2 in favor of the buccaneers, I ran into Phumudzo Manenzhe, a former Pirates player and SuperSport football analyst, taking time to great his fans. Clearly moved by the passion of the locals.
I’d definitely recommend going to check out a game at Moses Mabida and trying out the food for yourself which I’m going to rate a 6.8 out of 10 and the vibe of the stadium 8 out of 10, but if it’s not the best stadium experience in South Africa, you need to let me know in the comments where I’m going next.
