Westbrook Bakery & Take-Away

I’m Nick Hamman and I’m looking for the best bunny chow in South Africa and today your comments have sent me to, believe it or not, a Bakery, specifically Westbrook Bakery and Takeaway about 35km north east of Durban inside this small coastal village.

Founded by founded by Narisha and Sham Pather, this small unassuming spot first opens up as a bakery selling mango pickles, crushed chilli and all manor of sweet and savoury baked goods, but a quick push through this door and this takeaway spot opens up to you

Offering a variety of curries, fish and chips and local South African, Indian favourites it was the prawn bunny I was here to try. R150 gets you this quarter loaf of hallowed out white bread with piping hot prawn curry. The bread drenched in a deep, rich, brick-red Durban gravy. The prawns on top are tender, soaking in that spicy, buttery masala that hits you with heat, tangy tomato and the smell of toasted spices before you even take a bite. The sauce pools at the bottom in a thick, glossy moat, begging you to tear off a piece of bread and drag it through until your fingers burn in the best way.

I would highly recommend trying out Westbrook Bakery and Takeaway for yourself and have left their details in the caption, but if this is not the best bunny chow in South Africa, you need to let me know in the comments where I’m going next?
