I’m Nick Hamman, and I’m looking for the best steak sandwich in South Africa—and I may have just found it here at Momo’s Takeaway and Grill at The V-Max Centre in Boksburg. Despite being on the scene for less than half a decade, this spot, run by Abdullah, has become the talk of the town and is already being compared to the greats.

With all the classics you’d expect—from parcels to AKs, steak sandwiches, and more—it’s love, care, and a deep respect for the goats before them that set Momo’s apart.

As legend goes, Abdullah’s dad’s brother had a famous fast-food joint back in the early ‘70s, with a steak sandwich recipe so legendary that hungry fans would travel far and wide to taste it. Today, that secret old-school recipe has been entrusted to Momo’s, and the result? People are going crazy for its OG flavors.

First things first, the iconic parcel, done old-school and wrapped in the same paper it’s been coming in for generations. Leah’s parcel—with an extra piece of fish, as I got it—includes two packets of chips, four Viennas, four Russians, and ten garlic polony, finished off with salt, vinegar, and masala. It goes for R220, excluding the fish.

Next up, the Steak AK—a 30cm roll packed with steak, chips, cheese, French polony, salad, and a Russian, all drenched in sauces. This one goes for R130.

Then, history on bread—shredded steak, cheese, and chips, toasted between two slices of bread for R80.

And finally—guys, this was honestly my favorite—The Stevie Special. Chicken strips with cheese in a secret chicken sauce, plus chips and polony, all for R100.

I highly recommend trying out Momo’s for yourself—here are their details:
