Uzma's Fast Foods

I’m Nick Hamman, and I’m looking for the best steak sandwich in South Africa—and I might have just found it. Here at the legendary Uzma’s in Actonville, Gauteng.

With an unmistakable sense of community, this spot is run by Uncle Rauph, a well-respected man in the community who has been serving up hungry locals here since the 80s. Actonville is a melting pot of history, culture, and some of the best food you’ll find in Gauteng.

Originally developed as an Indian township during apartheid, Actonville has held onto its rich cultural roots while evolving into a vibrant, tight-knit community. It’s the kind of place where the smells of spicy samoosas and freshly baked roti fill the air, where family-run businesses have been serving the community for generations, and where there’s always a story behind every street corner.

Not without its challenges, however, this store was sadly the victim of an armed robbery a few years ago, which took the life of Ralph’s son. Despite the tragedy, this family business has carried on, serving, in my opinion, some of the best-priced and most delicious food around—like The Clover: Steak, two patties, Russian, French polony, chips, egg, cheese, and salad. This is a monster. Hard to hold and hard to put down.

The toasted steak special here also goes for only R70, and honestly, I think I’ll just be sneakily rewatching this video from time to time to relive the magic. I would highly recommend checking out Uzma’s Fast Foods and Bakery for yourself, and I’ve left their details in the caption.

But if this isn’t the best steak sandwich in South Africa, you need to let me know in the comments where I’m going next!
