Anong Thai Restaurant
20 Hettie St Cyrildene
I’m Nick Hamman and I’m looking for the best Thai Food in South Africa and today your comments have sent me to Anong in Cyrildene in Johannesburg. On both occasions I’ve come here this place has been quiet, which after tasting the food I find hard to believe. Wanting something hot to ward off any impending sickness as summer slowly starts to slip I way, I ordered Tom Krong, A hot soup with lemon grass, lime leaves, dried fish and chili which I got with vegetables for R90. Fair warning to anyone who doesn’t do hot food, this is certainly not the dish for you, but rather for lovers of , aromatic, potent flavours with hints of sour and savory and seriously strong heat.
For mains I went for Phad Thai with chicken, a popular Thai dish consisting of stir-fried rice noodles, typically served with tofu or shrimp, eggs, peanuts, bean sprouts, and a combination of other ingredients, served here for R100. While its exact origins are debated, Pad Thai is widely believed to have been created in the 1930s or 1940s as part of a national campaign to modernize and standardize Thai cuisine. I’d highly recommend trying Anong, but if it’s not the best Thai food in South Africa you need to let me know in the comments where I’m going next
