Akhalwaya's Fast Foods

If you want an awesome steak rounder, you need to come to Fordsburg, Johannesburg, and pay a visit to one of the original Akalwayas fast food outlets. Coming from the Oriental Plaza, you take a left on Barney Simon and Central Street and stop just before you arrive at Solly’s Corner.

This small shop, which can be easy to miss, is one of many Akalwayas fast food spots now all over Johannesburg.

Now in their 4th generation, the Akalwayas family can trace itself back to at least 1926 when a traveling salesman arrived from India and opened up a spice shop on what is now Dolly Rathebe Street. All of the Akalwayas are related but independently owned.

Stepping inside the small store, you’ll be greeted by the friendly faces of the owners and locals, many of whom are regulars there to purchase anything from parcels, burgers, toasted sandwiches, and what I'm here for today—the steak rounder special.

Telling you what's not on this bad boy is a shorter list than what is on there, but between the two buns, you’ll find steak, polony, chips, lettuce, onions, tomato, cheese, and their iconic sauce and spices. Something about tackling this with a knife and fork just seems wrong, so forgive the mess, but I promise I’ll survive.

As far as fast food goes, Akalwayas is a 10 out of 10 in my books, but if there’s somewhere else I need to go, you need to let me know in the comments.
