Hanover Street Bakery

I’m Nick Hamman from Hammy Eats and I’m looking for the best bakery in South Africa and today I’m at place that for nearly 3 decades has held a spot firmly in the Mayfair community, Hanover Street Bakery on you guessed it, Hanover Street. First opening its doors in 1998 it was 9 years ago that the new owner Fayyaz Moosa took over , commiting to sticking to what was already working, getting a rare chance to go behind the scenes I met head baker Moosa, a stalwart who has been here since the doors first opened. Heading yet another floor up on the stairway to confectionary heaven I met another member of the family, Ebrahaim, the king of cakes. Everything here is made fresh from the sweet to the savoury and is only kept for 24 hours. Anything that doesn’t sell is donated to needy people in the surrounding areas. Being an Islamic stronghold, with a masjid across the road, the sense of community is clearly felt here. taking suggestions from locals and some of you guys in the comment section, my haul included a variety of different tasty treats, most importantly of which was the caramel loaf,. a sweet, caramel-topped loaf, soft and indulgent, served warm with a generous pour of caramel over it during special occasions like Eid, adding to its decadent reputation.
