Today I’m out in Joburg South my brother in the suburb of Ormonde, just a stones throw from Gold Reef City and Soweto
The south is the kind of place where everyone either knows a guy or is the guy. A place of close knit communities where aunties no everyone’s business, a place with people who stick together through thick and thin
I’m here to visit The Chip Shop, a spot you guys have been begging me to try for nearly two year.
Mohammed Dangor first opened the doors here in the late 90’s, fast becoming a stalwart of the community as one of the first halal shops in the area. Known and loved by the locals,
The menu has all of what you’d expect. Fries, roti’s, parcels and what I’ve come here to try, The Steak Rounder Special
Now for those wondering, what’s a rounder, let ya boy school you
it’s basically a soft, pillowy bun – round like your uncle’s belly after Sunday lunch – stuffed with saucy steak, melted cheese, and all the greasy goodness that keeps the South going. It’s a staple. It’s a tradition. It’s the kind of thing you grab with both hands and don’t put down until it’s done.
Word is, The Chip Shop’s rounder hits different. Locals say it’s got that perfect balance of flavour, spice, and nostalgia. So today, I’m here to put that to the test. Will it live up to the hype? This was a toasted sesame seed bun, loaded with spicy, marinated chips, masala steak, palony, tomato, cheese, lettuce and cucumber
It’s a monster, so make sure to come hungry when you pay a visit.
