South Side Grills
7737 Lehele St Protea Glen
I’m Nick Hamman, and I’m on the hunt for the best grill in South Africa. Today I’m putting you onto a spot that I believe has all the makings of greatness.
Situated in Protea Glen, a vibrant township in the west of Johannesburg with a proud community spirit and deep roots in the city’s growth, this is South Side Grill. It’s run by Hloni Motuang, a 24-year-old South African with passion, determination, and a dream to honour his mother’s legacy.
Hloni’s mother, Constance, raised him with a hustler’s spirit. After she was sadly retrenched from her job, she gave her last R10,000.00 to her son so he could start his business. Tragically passing soon after, Hloni saw making his business a success as the only meaningful way to honour her legacy.
I arrived just as a storm was dissipating, leaving the streets flooded. The moment I said I wanted to sit down, they took great care, he immediately instructed his staff to dry and prepare a table.
With a much-needed glimmer of sun amidst the whackness that has been the Gauteng summer so far, I sat down to enjoy my meal.
First things first: this place was clean. Real grass underfoot, so you can enjoy the kasi vibe in style.
Their slogan“Food made with love is our religion” rings true, and you could feel it with every bite. I opted to try a kota and a burger.
This is the South Side Rib Bite, their “last number” offering, and it’ll set you back R90. Built for professionals only, it’s a toasted kota, and honestly, I could spend less time telling you what isn’t inside it. What I can tell you is it’s damn delicious: a patty, Russian, egg, cheese, rib patty, plenty of sauce, spiced chips, and salad.
Then there’s the South Side On The Double burger with chips for R120. This was a Hamman stamp-of-approval, certified epicness. Saucy, juicy, sloppy, triple-stacked to the heavens, skip your next meal, flavour-packed burger.
I would highly recommend South Side Grill, and I’ve left their details in the caption. But if this is not the best grill in South Africa, you need to let me know in the comments: where am I going next?
