Signage exclusively in Amharic.
48 Becker St Yeoville
I’m Nick Hamman and I’m looking for the best Ethiopian restaurant
in South Africa and I might have just found it by hopping in a taxi and cruising through the streets of Yeoville to right opposite the police station, to come and try out this spot with only Amharic signage which Google Translate told me says Rohobot.
Ethiopians invented coffee, so best believe it’s good here. Made fresh, together with tena adam, an aromatic, slightly bitter herb stirred gently into the blend. A strong community presence, a pool table and TVs showing football are all good signs that you’ve come to a good spot.
Then, a classic feast. Injera, the spongy sourdough flatbread made from teff, is the base for, among other things, shiro, a smooth stew made from ground chickpeas or broad beans, cooked with onions, garlic, and spices.
Gomen, which is collard greens slowly cooked with onions and oil.
Misir wot, or red lentil stew.
Tibs, sautéed beef, usually pan-fried with onions and chillies and more. The juices here are freshly squeezed and incredibly delicious. I’d also recommend trying out ambasha, a dense, slightly sweet, lightly crusted bread, and ergo, a cool, tangy, lightly fermented yogurt-style milk drink.
I would highly recommend trying out Rohobot for yourself and have left the details in the caption, but if this is not the best Ethiopian food in South Africa, you need to let me know in the comments where I’m going next?
Location: opposite Yeoville Police Station which is at 48 Becker St, Yeoville, Johannesburg, 2198
