Yindees
22 Kamp St Gardens
I’m Nick Hamman and I’m looking for the best Thai restaurant in South Africa, and today my search has led me to Cape Town, on the corner of Camp and Kloof Street, to Yindees.
Owned by Neeran, who together with his wife are pillars of the Thai community in SA. I was privileged to attend this dinner with Chargé d’Affaires of the Kingdom of Thailand Mr. Paisit Boonparlit, together with Counsellor Waranat Dechphoki, Minister Counsellor of the Commercial Office of Thailand Auttachai, and members of the embassy and community.
Housed within a historical Victorian national monument, Yindees has been winning awards for its food for over two decades. My advice when eating with locals is to acknowledge their expertise, grab a beer – in this case a Singha, and let them order for you.
Our spread included off-menu items you can also ask for, like two spicy salads (beef and chicken) packed with heat and flavour.
One of my all-time favourite dishes globally is Tom Yum,
yindees.wav
a hot and sour Thai soup with lemongrass, lime, galangal, chili and lime juice, usually with prawns or chicken.
It might surprise you to know that in 2024, Thailand exported over 886,000 metric tons of rice to South Africa – making SA one of their top five rice buyers.
At Yindees, I’d recommend Sai Ua pork sausages, the crispy pork belly roll with a knockout dipping sauce, Chu Chee fish and any duck dish you like.
