Fabrica Do Prego
59 Campground Rd Rondebosch
I’m Nick Hamman and the best beef Prego in South Africa just might be here, at Fabrica Do Prego — but that’s not what I know it as.
To me, this will always be Chippies.
That was the name of this place when it opened almost 30 years ago. And if, like me, you grew up in the Southern Suburbs of Cape Town, you’ll know this spot.
Close to the school I went to, this is where we came after sports matches, during breaks for school plays and music recitals, and sometimes just to feel like we belonged somewhere.
You walked in and knew exactly what to expect — the smell of vinegar, oil, garlic and meat sizzling on the grill. The sound of chips hitting the fryer. The same people behind the counter. The same regulars ordering the same thing.
And that Prego roll… it wasn’t just food — it was ceremony. Steak soaked in their secret marinade, slapped onto a Portuguese roll that somehow stayed crusty on the outside and soft in the middle. The sauce dripped down your fingers, and the chips were always generous, golden, and perfectly salty.
This place is part of my DNA — and whether you knew it as Chippies or Fabrica do Prego — it’s a place that makes you nostalgic for something you might not even remember properly, but can feel in your bones.
