I’m Nick Hamman and yes, reviewing food is an extreme sport—with content creators at serious risk of lemon eye. I’m on the hunt for the best fish and chips in South Africa.
Today I’m in Cape Town, on Long Street, at a spot that’s been serving it up hot since 1958—including a one-time visit from President Ramaphosa: Revelas Fish & Burger Co. 🐟🍟
Having changed ownership about a year ago, the jury’s still out on whether they’re staying true to their OG flavours—and knowing how seriously Capetonians take their fish, the critics are going to be harsh.
Value for money? All of this—minus the pickled onions—came in at just R100: a parcel with chips, hake, calamari, and a slice of lemon for zest. That’s a solid deal.
The chips: I like them Cape-style—vinegar, salt, a little spice—and this spot delivered.
The calamari: I always get flack for eating seafood in Joburg, so Joburgers, jump in the comments and let me have it 😂
The fish: There’s something comforting about a fryer that’s been sizzling since before your parents were born. You can taste the freshness.
I couldn’t fault the meal—solid all around—and I’ll definitely be back. Check out Revelas for yourself, and if you don’t think it’s the best fish and chips in South Africa, tell me where to go next 👇
