Super Fisheries

I’m Nick Hamman and today I’ve come to try a Gatsby from the place where the popular fast food was first invented in Athlone in the Cape Flats Area of Cape Town at a spot called Super Fisheries.
The Gatsby is a simple concept: a bread roll filled with chips and a choice of fillings and sauces, but where did it originate?
As legend goes in 1976, food shop owner Rashaad Pandy wanted to serve a quick but filling meal to workers helping him renovate his store. He filled a large round loaf with "slap chips" polony sausage and achaar and cut this into wedges. "Froggy," one of the workers declared the sandwich a "Gatsby smash," alluding to the movie The Great Gatsby
Known for their great fish, I decided to go for the mega fish and calamari Gatsby, which came together with tomatoes, lettuce, and your choice of sauce. The bread was fresh, the chips were slap, and the fish was soft and flavourful. To me, this is an excellent Gatsby, but more than that, this place deserves its flowers as a proud Cape Town institution, forever claiming its proud space in the culinary history of the area, but the question of who does it best is and should be fiercely contested, so if Athlone Super Fisheries isn’t the best, let me know where I'm going next.
