HeSheng Chinese Restaurant
269 Main Rd Sea Point
I’m Nick Hamman and I’m looking for the best Chinese restaurant in South Africa and today I’m out in Sea Point in Cape Town, only one street up from the highest concentration of wannabe influencers in the world on the promenade at He Sheng on Main Road. This spot ticks all my boxes, it’s understated, family-run, affordable and offers authentic, handmade Chinese cuisine. Apparently famous for their soup dumplings and cucumber, I only learned this after the fact, however I had a distinct craving: spicy beef noodle soup.
As a Joburger privileged to have Chinatowns on my doorstep with brilliant food, I’m always cautious about venturing outside. However, the craving was strong, and my goodness, was I glad I did! The Spicy Beef Flank Noodles go for R125. This is one of my favourite dishes and I judge it on the beef, broth and noodles. Ticking all the boxes, the flank – which is a lean, richly flavoured cut – was tender with deep, meaty notes. The broth was vibrant and aromatic. Think chili bean paste, garlic, star anise, Sichuan peppercorns, bay leaf – deeply satisfying. And the noodles? Epic. Wheat noodles, handmade. Comforting, soupy, perfect for slurping.
I would highly recommend trying out He Sheng and have left the details in the caption, but if it’s not the best Chinese restaurant in South Africa, you need to let me know in the comments where I’m going next.
