I’m Nick Hamman and I might have just found the best lemon meringue in South Africa, its also entirely possible this is the best Koesister in Mzansi, which isn’t surprising because in truth, the best cooks are often in home kitchens, holding the secrets of intergenerational family recipe’s. If you want to taste this food you’ll need to meet Urshie Jacobus, a stalwart of the Kalk Bay fishing community which I recently had the incredible experience of doing through my friend, Traci Kwaai. Traci is a sixth generation Kalk Bay Fisher Child. Deeply passionate about preserving and amplifying the rich, often overlooked stories of her community. Recently taking her Walk of Remembrance tour, which I can’t recommend more, I walked through the harbour of this coastal town, where the proud, complicated, painful and resilient stories of her people’s indigenous history is being preserved and strengthened through her storytelling.
Afforded the opportunity to be invited into Urshie’s family home, meant that as we sat on coaches covering beautiful parquet flooring, against the backdrop of the mountain with the air filled with the smells of the sea we tucked into Snoek Smoortjie, with snoek caught by her son, local fishing legend, Leigh. This is cured snoek that’s braised or stewed with onions, tomatoes, potatoes and spices. Its incredibly delicious, best served with rice and should be enjoyed as often as possible.
Rethinking the idea of museums, Traci teamed up with Kyle Marais and Low-Def Film Factory to build this wonderful app, which acts as a virtual reality living museum. Through scanning the stickers on locally made produce which you can buy for yourself, the stories of the community are brought to life before your eyes.
I would highly recommend you take this tour for yourself, check out the app and support the work that Traci is doing in her community and I’ve left her details in the caption. Make sure to keep following me for more epic adventures.
