Zabas Shisanyama
2 Johannes Nkosi Ave Wiggins
I’m Nick Hamman and I’m looking for the best ashisanyama in South Africa and today your comments have sent me to Zaba’s Shisanyama in Mayville, Durban (2 Johannes Nkosi Street, Durban).
I made friends with the guys at Syavaya Tours who offered to take me out for the day, knowing I’d be in search of something delicious.
Mayville in Durban developed during apartheid as a racially segregated area bordering Cato Manor, shaped by forced removals and Group Areas Act policies. It became a refuge for displaced Indian and Black communities and played a role in the broader resistance movements linked to its neighbouring activist strongholds.
After ordering my selection of meats and taking it out to braai, we did some exploring of the local area, against the backdrop of KZN’s luscious, tropical landscape.
Before returning for a Zamalek Ngud’ and some of the best spiced, braai’d meat I’ve ever tasted. Also, this pap done with herbs, butter, Aromat and stock was a taste revolution.
This was a beautiful South African experience that KZN should be proud of and I would highly recommend checking out Zaba for yourself — I’ve left their details in the caption, but if this is not the best shisanyama in South Africa, you need to let me know in the comments where I’m going next.
