I’m Nick Hamman, and I’m looking for the best Bunny Chow in South Africa . Today, your comments have sent me to Happy Chappy in Durban, inside the Mangrove Beach Center in North Beach. Having recently moved across from its previous location, the spot is still going strong after more than 3 decades, with the owner Jay Naidoo holding down the fort. I'm going for a mutton bunny together with a 500ml soft drink. I paid R105. Bunny Chows are a part of the proud culinary history of Durban’s strong Indian population and while its exact history is disputed, it dates as far back as the migrant Indian workers' arrival in South Africa and is a beautiful example of delicious ingenuity. A hollowed-out loaf of bread, loaded with curry. To me, good bunny chow needs to consist of soft white bread, a generous portion of well-spiced, flavorful curry, which in the case of mutton should be soft and tender. I’ve got to say that Happy Chappy did an excellent job and I’d definitely recommend giving them a try when you’re next in town, but if they’re not the best Bunny Chow in South Africa, you need to let me know where I’m going next
