CaneCutters Umhlanga
Aurora Dr Umhlanga Ridge Durban
I’m Nick Hamman, and I’m looking for the best Bunny Chow in South Africa . Today, your comments have sent me to CaneCutters to their branch at the Gateway Caltex
In truth, it’s locals who hold the secrets to the best spots in town, so I brought my new friend Moses who’d been helping me out with transport this weekend along to try the food.
With a lifelong career in hospitality, Moses was definitely the man for the job. CaneCutters explains that the word bunny is derived from the name ‘Banyas’ which is one of the Indian Gujarati Castes, and here they do it fantastically well. Going for a mutton bunny, which cost R109.90, you could tell this was curry that wasn’t rushed with tastes of cardamom, bay leaves, chilies, ginger and garlic all beautifully celebrated. With a disputed history, one story suggests that Apartheid laws meant that black customers were prohibited from being served at restaurants and the bunny chow was invented as a handy way for people to buy food that they could take away. I’m eager to learn more of the history and would appreciate being educated, but what I can say with certainty is that CaneCutters deserves a place on my search, but if they’re not the best Bunny Chow in South Africa you need to let me know in the comments where I’m going next
