I’m Nick Hamman, and if you want to indulge in the bold, comforting flavours of Pakistan, save this video and head to this hole-in-the-wall gem in Fordsburg: Khwaja Gharib Nawaj.

Started over 20 years ago by Altaf Bapo, this family-run spot is powered by his son Naweed, his brother, and their uncle — the head chef behind it all. From karahi to korma, they serve it all, but today I went for their dal: rich, slow-cooked lentils infused with garlic, ginger, turmeric, and ghee. Served with two naan and two drinks for just R100 — it’s pure soul food.

This is humble cooking done brilliantly, and I can’t recommend it enough.
