Che Argentine Grill
128 Jan Smuts Ave Parkwood
I’m Nick Hamman and I’m looking for the best steak in South Africa and I may have just found it, along the main road of Jan Smuts in Parkwood Johannesburg at Che Argentine Grill which sees you walking in from the cold of the streets into this beautiful, dimly lit restaurant with an open kitchen and distinct nods to the heritage of its owners. Oscar, a Uruguay native who grew up in South Africa and Bernado who moved from Argentina only some years ago. Our starters selection included Gambas al ajillo, shrimp in garlic-infused olive oil with smoky hints of paprika and a touch of sherry sweetness, and Peruvian ceviche with Fish, lime juice, onion and chili. But the main event I was here to treat myself to was a 28-day dry aged 500-gram Rib Eye. Aged meat is pricey, and the prices may not be on the menu, so check beforehand. It is richer, beefier, and a lot more tender than standard steaks as the enzymes in the meat break down connective tissue during the aging process. This steak was R650. It was savory, yet complex and soft like butter. I felt like I was somehow both connected to my ancestors, cooking meat over an open fire a million years ago, while also experiencing the pinnacle of modern culinary expertise. I’d highly recommend treating yourself to Che Argentine Grill, but if it's not the best steak in South Africa, you need to let me know in the comments where i'm going next
