I’m Nick Hamman. Join me today as I explore Johannesburg’s first Chinatown, which settled in Commissioner Street in the early 20th century, enjoying its heyday between the 30’s and 70’s. Once home to two Chinese schools, social hubs and the only Chinese newspaper in Africa, now few stalwarts remain, like the restaurant Swallows Inn, which lays claim to being the oldest Chinese restaurant in South Africa. Unsure of what to order, I went for a combo noodle soup, fairly priced at R95, including flat noodles, chicken, beef, and seafood together with vegetables This was traditional Chinese food, prepared by people who’ve clearly done something right to last as long as they have. I’d recommend a visit to Swallows Inn to try the food out for yourself. Make sure to give me a follow for more adventures
