Join me Nick Hamman as I travel South Africa looking for its best Shawarma and today your comments have led me to Syrian Rose in Fordsburg

Let me tell you, you guys were insistent I come here, so the hype was real. Let’s see if it holds up.
The immersive nature of watching the laffa being spun to readiness in front of you adds to the energy and atmosphere of the restaurant and like most classic shawarma places you are welcome to your selection of fillers to accompany your mains.
I went for a spicy lamb shawarma and added extra chili as a key topping together with tahini.
Getting down to business it brings me great pleasure to inform you that this shawarma was power.
Smoky, spicy, flavourful. The heat was noticeable, but not overwhelming. The kind that builds slowly over the meal. The meat was tender and delicious, and the toppings created the perfect amount of crunch and freshness
The shawarma was R75 which to me was reasonable. But if I still haven’t found the best, let me know where I’m going next!
