I’m Nick Hamman and I’m looking for the best bunny chow in South Africa and if you honestly thought I was about to use this cutlery, you still need to hit the follow button.
Less than 5 seconds in and already my second controversy of this stop on my search is that I’m not in Durban, but rather Lenz South at Bedford Bunny in Gauteng, with a store also in Mondeor.
Starting with price, this quarter mutton bunny was R80
With over 30 years in the game, this spot was started in the early 90’s by Aunty Shamla, who together with her husband Keith was was determined to offer authentic South Africa Indian Flavours.
This giant of the Mzansi food world has been around since the 1940’s. Hollowed out white bread, filled with curry. In addition to it creating an unstoppably flavourful sensation of tastes and textures, the bread also keeps the curry piping hot throughout the dining experience
The spot has a relaxed, comfortable vibe, which dare I say it, reminded me of being in Durban, with plenty of local products proudly sold on the shelves like The Original Miracle Sauce, Real Time Cashews, Pink and White Peanuts and DJ China’s Fruit for R15.
Going the extra mile for you guys I decided to eat this entire chili, which I immediately regretted, but when it comes to this bunny I have nothing but its praises to sing. slow-cooked, tender lamb curry, rich with Durban spices, soaked into every corner, and crowned with the golden, gravy-drenched “virgin” piece, eager for soaking
I would highly recommend checking out Bedford Bunny for yourself, but if this is not the best Bunny Chow in South Africa, you need to let me know in the comments where I’m going next
