Lotus Thai
975 Arcadia St Hatfield
I’m Nick Hamman and I’m looking for the best Thai restaurant in South Africa and as much as I hate saying “hidden gem” because usually that word is used by food influencers who care more about followers than food, there is no better way to describe Lotus Thai, one of the most beautiful, delicious, authentic and unassuming from the outside Thai spots I’ve ever been to. Run by Sasipin, a passionate, frankly hilarious and energetic women, this spot offers up traditional dishes that can be hard to find anywhere else. I’ve you’re new to this cuisine, I’d recommend going from the menu, but if you’re tight with Thai, you can and should call ahead and ask them to prepare an off the menu spread, like we’d done on the day of my visit. Among our fest we had Moo Sam Chan Toon A platter of braised pork cuts, simmered in dark soy, herbs and spices until soft. Yam Hu Muu A spicy, sour salad made from thinly sliced boiled pork ear mixed with onion, celery, tomato, herbs, lime and chilli. Laab Dip, raw beed mince with bile and spices. Whole squid stuffed simmered in a sweet dark soy and black ink-style sauce until glossy and Sai Krok Isaan, fermented pork sausage.
This spot is one of the favourites of my friends from the embassy of the Royal Kingdom of Thailand, who I joined here for lunch together with Sven Grant from Eclipse Fight League. I would highly recommend you try out Lotus Thais for yourself and have left the details in the caption, but if this is not the best Thai Restaurant in South Africa, I need you to let me know in the comments where I’m going next?
