Madala Men's Hostel, Alexandra
2075 Rooseveldt St Alexandra
I’m Nick Hamman, and here’s the best “head” I had in Joburg in 2025 — cow head meat (Nyama Yentloko) 🇿🇦🔥
First stop: Madala Hostel in Alex. With maskandi blasting through the corridors, we headed up to the 5th floor of a building built in the 1970s, where Ngema was doing what he’s done for decades — preparing Nyama Yentloko like a true master.
Boiled with water, salt, and Six Gun Spice, it comes out tender, fatty, salty, and ridiculously good. Served in a packet, right by the famous Alex goats… an unforgettable, uniquely local experience.
For the real deal authenticity, you’ve got to hit Half Clutch in Ebony Park, Midrand. Run by Oneil Selomo (who left the automotive industry to start this), it’s a proper family operation — backed by his sons Terrance and Evans, plus seasoned hands like Joannes Bogopha bringing serious hospitality experience.
They serve the classics: nyama yentloko, meaty bones, hardbody chicken, stews, chicken feet, intestines, and plenty of pap — done properly and priced fairly. Proper food. Proper flavor.
And finally: an elevated experience for lovers of Mzansi cuisine — Mogodu in the north. They take South African classics and put a fresh spin on them, ready for the global stage (two locations). You can even pair this dish with spicy noodles if you’re feeling adventurous — or keep it traditional with a cup of broth.
This food is a proud part of Mzansi’s heritage — cultural, sacred, and also incredibly delicious. I’m already planning my 2026 “head hunt” so tell me: where should I go next?
