Daisy Dumplings House

I’m Nick Hamman, and I’m looking for for the best dumplings in South Africa, those little pockets of comfort made from thin dough wrappers and stuffed with juicy fillings like pork, chicken, prawn, or veggies, then steamed, boiled, or pan-fried until they’re perfect.

Today I’m at Daisy Dumpling House in Rivonia and first up, a smashed cucumber salad for R98, Big irregular chunks still crunchy, coated in chilli oil, garlic and toasted sesame, with that glossy almost sticky dressing that creeps up on you rather than shouting. It eats cold and clean but spicy, garlicky and addictive

Then for R100, 18 of these chicken and cabbage boiled dumplings done in proper Northern Chinese style. The filling leans light and juicy, minced chicken mixed with finely chopped cabbage giving you that savoury depth but also, a natural sweetness and moisture, which keeps everything tender inside the thick wheat wrapper. Boiled rather than pan fried, the skin stays soft and chewy, best enjoyed with black vinegar and a touch of chilli oil.
