ODUDUWA RESTAURANT & AFRICAN FOOD

320 Marshall St Jeppestown

I’m Nick Hamman and I hate the term hidden gem, but frankly what is some of the best central and western African food I’ve ever eaten found inside this canteen styled eatery anonymously tucked away without signage on the bottom end of Marshalltown behind the Johannesburg CBD if not exactly that.

Invited by my friend and artist Neo Ramushu for lunch together with Minced Madolo and Kamogelo I had one of the coolest dining experiences I’ve had in a long time, that you need to try.

Run by husband and wife couple Djenebou from Mali and Arouna from Benin this west and central African explosion goes by the name Oduduwa Resturaunt. A cool note for my Muslim followers this place is halal, so they can come and enjoy too.

If you’re new to the foods of the continent, this is a great place to start, not only because of the wide variety of authentic dishes on offer, but also because of the warm and friendly hospitality you receive here, making for an incredibly pleasant dining experience

With influences from all over mostly west and some central Africa, expecgt hearty slow cooked food built for noursiment here.

Think stews that simmer for hours, thick sauces made from peanuts, okra, leaves or tomatoes. Think Palm oil chillies, think ancient traditions perfected to maximize flavour as resourcefully as possible. Think shared meals eaten with your hands, like we did here.

Cow heels, gelatinous, chewy and filled with the juices of a fiery stew

This ginger drink felt like no colds formed against it would ever prosper and this hibiscus masterpiece know as bissap was tart, lightly sweet, refreshing and the perfect drink to cut through thre food

I would highly recommend trying out Oduduwa Resturaunt for yourself and have left the details in the caption. Let me know in the comments how this lunch looked to you and make sure to give me a follow for more epic adventures.
