TAN KAO

I’m Nick Hamman and if seeing this smoking tower of wagyu beef elegantly lifted onto the grill and sizzling before your eyes doesn’t move you, then you need to come and try out Tan Kao Charcoal Grill in Rivonia, Johannesburg, a part of town known for an incredible selection of Asian food.

This is an elevated Chinese dining experience where you can step into private booths, settle in, and be mesmerised as your selections are presented in elaborate, decorative displays before being grilled right in front of you.

This is the kind of place you book for a celebration with friends or a romantic date night with your partner. Living in Johannesburg gives you access to food from almost every culture, but fine dining experiences like this are rarer, which makes this feel different and exceptionally cool.

The menu is in English with clear pictures to guide you through your selections. Here they use Binchotan, a traditional Japanese white charcoal made from dense oak that burns extremely hot, clean and with very little smoke, allowing for precise, even grilling without overpowering the natural flavour of the meat.

The wagyu hits the grill with intense marbling, melting into the heat and releasing a rich, buttery aroma as it sears over the glowing charcoal.

That crispy golden chicken strip, lifted with chopsticks and draped in sauce and sesame, delivers crunch, sweetness and a proper indulgent bite.

And then wrapping that perfectly grilled slice in fresh lettuce with kimchi and a crisp radish slice adds freshness, crunch and balance to all that smoky richness.

I would highly recommend trying out Tan Kao (Tan Kow) for yourself. I have left the details in the caption. Tag someone you would love to experience an evening here with in the comments and who knows, maybe they will get the message and give you what you deserve.
