Fish Hook Fourways - Traditional Fish and Chips

I’m Nick Hamman and I’m looking for the best fish and chips shop in South Africa because honestly who wouldn’t want something juicy and fish that they could squirt all over, with the prospect of a big meaty, juicy sausage about to enter their mouth!

And naturally, I’m in Fourways Johannesburg at Fish Hook. Far from a natural ocean, so please go and educate me in the comments because cold storage hasn’t existed since the 1500’s and all fish in cape town of course comes straight from the fisherman’s line into your mouth, with bits of the bait still intact.

Immediately, this place just looks like it makes a mean fish parcel but going backstage you see that becoming even more true. The fish is brought in, cleaned and prepared. The batter and fish spice is done on site and of course gumball machines, sauce in small plastic containers and an ever smiling owner who runs the business together with her husband complete the package.

Expect things here to be deep fried. Sizzling, boiling, hot oil. So the chips are slap and the batter sticks to the parcel if you open it too abruptly. Fresh slices of lemon, fish was a golden crunchy exterior and a soft pillowy inside.

Sauce with a tang, calamari that will have you eating your fingers if you aren’t clever and of course, that classic Russian that ironically makes it very South African
