I’m Nick Hamman and I’m looking for the best fish & chips in South Africa and today your comments have sent me to a crowd favoruite Elsburg FishnChips in Germiston run by Eddie Canada and his family

They’ve been feeding people for decades.

been operating since the late 1970s, run by the same family for over 50 years.

From the outside, it’s a simple corner café. Inside, it’s exactly what you’d expect from a proper old-school South African fish and chip shop. You can buy everyday essentials at the front, and at the back, they’re making fish and chips the way they always have.

People don’t come here for a fancy experience. They come because they know what they’re getting. Hot slap chips in paper, salt and vinegar, proper portions, and food that’s consistent.

It’s the kind of place where people eat outside, on the pavement, watching the neighbourhood move around them. And it’s not just regulars. Over the years, it’s built a reputation across Johannesburg, with many people saying it’s worth the drive.

What makes it special isn’t just the food. It’s the longevity. In a country where so many small businesses don’t last, this one has, becoming part of the fabric of the community.

And how have they been able to survive you ask? Because their product is fantastic, and affordable. All of this fish and chips went for R70 and you cannot tell me it doesn’t look like the kind of thing you want to put in your face right now. When you go, because trust me you need to, tell them Hammy Sent you. I’m 100% given Els FishnChips the Hammy Stamp of approval, but if its not the best FishnChips in South Africa, you need to let me know in the comments where I’m going next
