I’m Nick Hamman and I’m looking for the best Chinese restaurant in South Africa and today your comments have sent me to Red Chamber in Rosebank, Johannesburg, which I’ve been told is quite possibly the best Peking duck spot. However, two things were true:

I wanted noodles and my wife wanted potstickers, and
we are all cooked out.
Our social batteries are depleted and after, yes, an amazing Easter cooking, entertaining and spending time with family, all we wanted this Family Day was to sit on the couch and have Mr D bring us our food, which they gladly did.

Honestly, I was so impressed.

Red Chamber is one of Joburg’s most iconic Chinese restaurants, and it’s been around since 1989. It was started by Emma Chen, who moved to South Africa from Taiwan and realised there was no proper, authentic Chinese food here at the time.

So she took a risk, borrowed money from friends and family, and turned an old jazz club in Rosebank into what would become a Joburg institution.

Today it’s in Hyde Park, still run with that same philosophy. No trends, just proper.

Think noodles, dumplings, big sharing plates, and that classic red-lantern vibe.

I would highly recommend trying out Red Chamber for yourself on Mr D, but if it’s not the best Chinese restaurant in South Africa, I need you to let me know in the comments where I’m going next.
