I’m Nick Hamman and I’m looking for the best crab curry in South Africa. For me it has to be Durban Indian style so I’m in Joburg at Aunty Pree’s Curry Spot. Her story runs deep. From a family rooted in Durban’s food culture to recipes shaped through apartheid when curry was packed into bread and passed out the back giving rise to the bunny chow. Here the masala is done properly. Fried down with onion garlic ginger spices and tomato until thick dark and the oil separates. No shortcuts. The crab curry I’m diving in. The heat hits straight away and keeps building. You crack the shells pull it apart and get to the sauce soaked deep inside that’s where it really lands. Messy hands on and worth it.
