Mike's Food n Car Wash

I’m Nick Hamman and I’m looking for the best ox liver in South Africa and today my search has taken my to Alex township in Jozi. Served up here at Mike’s Food n Car Wash in the fast east bank section of the Township. I went for the half plate, served together with pap and two sides and a full plate of delicious ox liver for R80.
Alex has been here since 1912 as one of the few places Black South Africans could legally own land, which made it politically and culturally charged from the start.
Alex sits in sharp contrast to neighbouring Sandton wealth—still dense and struggling w, yet pulsing with entrepreneurship, culture, and informal economies that keep it alive.
Places like this, where the pap is stiff, so hot that steam bursts out when you scoop it apart, burning your fingers if you don’t roll fast enough
The liver, sliced into strips and cooked in a rich, almost sweet gravy with onions and braai styled spices softening that natural metallic taste of the liver.
On the side we’ve for morogo, wild leavy greens together with chalackala made from carrots, cabbage, onions, tomatoes, beans, and chili.
I would highly recommend trying out Mike’s Food n Car Wash for yourself, but if its not the best place to get ox liver in south Africa, I need you to let me know in the comments where I’m going next?
