Popo Tea House

I’m Nick Hamman and I’m looking for the best Asian bakery in South Africa, and I might have just found it. I mean, look how light and squishy this taro cheesecake is, just jiggling in my hands and melting in my mouth.

This is Popo Tea House, and you need to come here. It’s on the roof of Rivonia Central, a place which already has about 10 Hammy Approved spots for fans of Asian flavour, but this is something special.

With a wide variety of treats you will struggle to find anywhere else, they’ve got cakes, canapés, coffee, crepes, blended, infused and mixed hot and cold delicious Asian teas.

Also, I hate the matcha trend, because matcha is amazing and so many places jumping on the bandwagon are serving crap. But not here – this is proper, authentic, rich, earthy, umami, delicious matcha, and it balances the sweetness of the taro cheesecake in all its delightful nutty, creamy goodness.
