I’m Nick Hamman and I’m looking for the best noodles in South Africa and seriously guys, these might be it. Through my travels I’ve come to learn some sure-fire signs the spot is going to bang, and here, they tick all the boxes. Nestled between the pleasure palace, your one stop shop for lotions, lingerie and lube and a cannabis store called the high table in edenval, this place doesn’t have an English name, although the sign translate to Shaanxi Noodle House, so we’re in central north china. There is no English menu, another good sign, and then all the expected: tissues, msg, soy, and a house-made chilli oil. With roots in the ancient Silk Road, this is one of China’s oldest cuisines

With Merchants travelling between China, Central Asia and the Middle East bringing cumin, beef, lamb and spices that are less common in eastern Chinese cooking.

“This is one of those bowls that looks like it’s going to destroy you with spice, but instead it surprises you. The chilli oil is fragrant rather than fiery, the broth is deep and beefy, the cabbage adds sweetness, and those hand-pulled noodles have that signature Shaanxi chew. It’s proper comfort food from one of China’s oldest culinary regions.
