Palace Meat Market

I’m Nick Hamman here to pay tribute to an icon of the Cape Town food scene, The Penny Palony, a beloved classic that I learned about Cape Town creator Asadullah who I’d recommend following for a deep dive into where to find the best, but for me I have come out to Palace Meat Market in Landsdowne, the Kingdom of meat price cutters

These thick, bright-red, ready-cooked sausages are sometimes called warme or hone worsies. They’re savoury and salty, spiced, savoury, juicy and best served hot

Their name is a nod to their affordability, with these two here costing less than R10 in this economy. This is a heritage food, born out of the story of immigration, halaal butchery traditions, Afrikaans, Afrikaaps, district six, forced removals, ingenuity, affordability, neighbourhood sharing and recipes passed between generations.

And that’s why it matters, and so, lets make this video a space to celebrate. Tell me in the comments, who makes them best, what are they best served with and when did you have yourself a Penny Palony

Location: Address: Aslam Centre, 660 Lansdowne Rd, Lansdowne, Cape Town, 7780
