Sunrise Chip N Ranch, Overport, Durban
Sparks Rd Overport Berea
I’m Nick Hamman and today I’m at an institution that boasts making the largest roti in SA, the historic Sunrise Chip ‘n Ranch, an icon of the Durban food scene.
Known famously as Johnnie’s Roti’s, this spot was founded by the late Baboo Birjanund, serving roti’s, breyani’s, curry’s and more. While being in clear need of some TLC — perhaps a lick of paint and a few screws in the table — make no mistake that this place has legendary status.
Originally a 24-hour roti temple, this was post-party pilgrimage. A slap chip sanctuary.
And the crown jewel? The chip ‘n cheese roti.
Deciding to go big I went for the option with mutton curry for R100. This was spicy, messy and mouth-watering — and for my money, Johnnie’s hasn’t lost their touch.
This tastes like high school nights, broken curfews, and 2am confessions outside a Golf GTI. If you haven’t eaten a roti on this pavement at 3 in the morning...
Have you even been to KZN?
I would highly recommend checking out Sunrise Chip ‘n Ranch for yourself and have left their details in the caption, but if it’s not the best roti in South Africa, you need to let me know in the comments where I’m going next?
