Upington Slaghuis

I’m Nick Hamman and I’m looking for the best biltong in South Africa as I travel the country on the 5Breakfast Heritage Tour and today I am in Upington in The Northern Cape, along the Orange River to visit The Upington Slaghuis.

First established in 1962 to 1962, this family run business is now carried on by the third generation’s Ruben Nel as Eben before him and Gerrie Senior before that. Priding themselves on their quality, they offer not only a wide variety of meats, but biltong two, from wheels, to Droëwors, to snapsticks, bacon biltong and of course, the classic biltong weighed and cut before your eyes. The Upington slaghuis came highly recommended and I can see why. This tong was loaded with flavor. I got to pick my own cut with a decent amount of fat and once I started, I couldn’t stop.
