The Braai Musketeers
131 Kellner St Brandwag
I’m Nick Hamman and I’m on a mission to find the best chicken in South Africa. Today, I’m in Bloemfontein ,the city of roses, eating it straight off the braai, roadside-style, right opposite Mimosa Mall.
One of three braai-based businesses all competing for the attention of hungry locals, I chose this trio of Victor, Small, and Neo, out here six days a week, perfecting the art of meat cooked on open flames. Known locally as The Braai Musketeers, the business is owned by Sibonelo, and here, a generous plate of chicken, pap, and sides will set you back just R50.
In a market this competitive, it’s consistency, flair, and affordability that make all the difference. And these guys tick all three. The steaming-hot chicken came straight from the coals, drenched in a glorious blend of BBQ and peri-peri sauces ,my tastebuds were ecstatic, my white shirt was terrified.
Curious whether Bloem pap is any different to what I know from Jozi? It’s not… but it’s still greatespecially with the veggies (because I’m a growing boy).
The chicken delivered. It was tasty, messy, indulgent, that perfect mix of juicy meat, fire-grilled char, and basting that bites back. It’s earned the Hammy Stamp of Approval.
I’ve left their contact details in the caption below. But if this isn’t the best chicken in South Africa, tell me where I’m going next.
