I’m Nick Hamman and I’m looking for the best steak in South Africa and I may have just found it, along the main road of Jan Smuts in Parkwood Johannesburg at Che Argentine Grill which sees you walking in from the cold of the streets into this beautiful, dimly lit restaurant with an open kitchen and distinct nods to the heritage of its owners. Oscar, a Uruguay native who grew up in South Africa and Bernado who moved from Argentina only some years ago. Our starters selection included Gambas al ajillo, shrimp in garlic-infused olive oil with smoky hints of paprika and a touch of sherry sweetness, and Peruvian ceviche with Fish, lime juice, onion and chili. But the main event I was here to treat myself to was a 28-day dry aged 500-gram Rib Eye. Aged meat is pricey, and the prices may not be on the menu, so check beforehand. It is richer, beefier, and a lot more tender than standard steaks as the enzymes in the meat break down connective tissue during the aging process. This steak…

Im Nick Hamman, and I’m looking for the best Greek restaurant in South Africa . Today, your comments have sent me to Parea Taverna in Illovo, with a branch also opening last year in Linden Johannesburg. With almost 3 decades of experience, which is a considerable feat in the restaurant game, this tried and tested institution is world-class. While on a weekend night, you might find festive Greek dancers entertaining guests, this quiet afternoon lunch stop of mine was just as delicious. Opting for a vegetarian platter for 1 for R189, I got dios, falafel, dolmades, haloumi, giant beans, baby marrow, and brinjal I also ordered souvlaki lamb for R69, which came as cubes of lamb on a skewer. In my experience, everything was excellent. The atmosphere was homely and cozy, understated and unpretentious, the food was exceptional, and the service was professional and friendly. All considered I’m going to give Parea an 8.7 out of town, as my favorite so far, but if it’s not the best…

If you’re looking for an awesome steak sandwich, you should come to Melville Johannesburg and try out De Baba Eatery. With many differing opinions on the area and a seemingly never-ending ebb and flow of business and development, Melville is special to me, as a suburb that creates space for the different, the artistic and the vibrant

Join me, Nick Hamman, as I travel through South Africa in search of its best Shawarma. Today, your comments have sent me to Grant Avenue in Norwood to visit an institution: The Shawarma Company, a Middle Eastern restaurant with 20 years of experience perfecting the art of the shawarma. Slowly spinning behind the counters are fat hunks of beef, chicken, and lamb, all waiting to be wrapped inside a pita or served as a platter with your selection of freshly prepared toppings. In addition to shawarmas, there is a wide selection of traditional cuisine available, but today, I'm here for the lamb shawarma in a pita.

If you want to try Kulfi, the traditional Indian ice cream, you should visit Gourmet Kulfi Barfi Ice Cream in Fordsburg, right at the back end of Fordsburg Square. Kulfi is denser and creamier than regular ice cream and is available to go in a wide variety of flavors for R15 a stick. The owner, who has been here for the last 5 years, also serves up plenty of other traditional treats like jalebi and, of course, barfi for its sweet-toothed customers. Kulfi is typically made by reducing milk to a thicker consistency before adding sugar and flavorings such as saffron, pistachios, or almonds. Let me know if you've ever tried this dessert and like and follow for more interesting food and travel adventures.

If you want to try delicious freshly made juices, squeezed in front of your eyes without inexplicably breaking the bank at the latest health trend shops you should instead come to The Juice Den in Fordsburg and watch as juices are pressed while you wait. I’d recommend their specialty sugar cane, or this combination of mango and Avo for R25 for half a litre. This hidden gem is worth a stop, and if you go to The Juice Den, let them know Nick Hamman sent you.

Im Nick Hamman and I’m looking for the best Stadium Food in South Africa and today I’ve come to one of the world’s greatest football Derbys Olanda Pirates versus Kaiser Chiefs at FNB Stadium in Soweto. It’s here that you’ll find Nancy who’s been running Nancy’s Fast Foods for the last 30 years. Already passing the skills of her business down to her grandson Lesedi, attributing consistency and love to her longevity. With all the Chisa Nyama classics you’d expect, Nancy serves up steamed bread with gravy, pap, coleslaw, chakalaka, chicken, chuck, and wors. A well-known face at sports games and events, today Nancy was feeding the hungry fans who’d come to watch their teams battle it out in a rivalry that’s become a deeply integral part of the proud history of the area since the 70s. Food, sport, and culture make for the perfect combination and great stadium food is a crucial component of any epic day out Nancy certainly knows what she’s doing, but South Africa is a…

Im Nick Hamman, and I’m looking for the best chisa nyama in South Africa, and today your comments have sent me to Kagiso, a township just South of Krugersdorp in Gauteng to visit Camphor meat supply. Like any good classic buy and braai, you walk in to select your meats, which are then weighed and priced before being taken outside to be braai’d. Kagiso has mostly Setswana speakers and was first established by ex-miners in the 1920’s. Honoring the great South African tradition of meat cooked on a flaming grill, the men here know what they’re doing. My selection of chuck, wors, liver, pap, and sala went for a total of R81 with the meat costing R47. The chuck and liver were decently done. Well spiced, cooked through and tasty, but the real star of the show was the chili wors which came juicy with a pretty good kick, which as a lover of spicy things made me super happy. I’d highly recommend checking Camphor Meat Supply out for yourself, but if it’s not the best chisa nyma in…

I’m Nick Hamman, and I’m looking for the best Biltong in South Africa, and I may have just found it. On a short turn off the N1 between Johannesburg and Bloemfontein at The Fat Butcher in Ventersburg. As you walk into the store, you’re immediately greeted by a salivating amount of hanging biltong and friendly and proficient staff, who cut and spice your selection. For me, the yellow fat and their combination of flavours is what puts them at my no.1 choice. If you do manage to stop over, I can also seriously recommend their homemade ginger beer, albeit coming in a bottle that might be hard to explain on the roads and their homemade pies, with oxtail being my personal favorite. To me, no South Africans experience of good biltong is complete with a trip to The Fat Butcher, but if it's not the best biltong in South Africa, you need to let me know in the comments where I’m going next?
