I’m Nick Hamman, and I’m looking for the best steak sandwich in South Africa—and I may have just found it here at Momo’s Takeaway and Grill at The V-Max Centre in Boksburg. Despite being on the scene for less than half a decade, this spot, run by Abdullah, has become the talk of the town and is already being compared to the greats.

If you want to fill yourself up with a delicious, proper parcel, you need to head to Fordsburg, beneath the Joburg CBD. Finding where Bree Street and Central Road collide you'll come to the iconic Solly's Corner, founded by the late Solly Kajee and his family more than half a century ago. For just R60, you'll get a parcel with a Russian, salt, masala, and vinegar, sitting on a bed of slap chips, which many say is the best in town. Wrapped up together and ready for you to enjoy. Other parcels available include polony and fish, with burgers and sandwiches also available for purchase. Pull in and join the bustle of hungry locals on any given afternoon in the week for an authentic experience of Fordsburg food from one of its longest-standing institutions

If you want to try a legend of South African fast food, you need to come to Akhalz in Norwood and experience The Wonder Why Pizza. An offshoot of the iconic Akhalwaya's, Akhalz is connected to one of the longest-standing institutions of fast food in the country, and in short, they know what they’re doing. This pizza is loaded with steak, cheese, chips, and palony, smothered in sauce, and blasted in a giant pizza oven before being served piping hot to customers for only R45. In addition to this famous pizza, they do samosas, a specialty of Lebanese flatbread, and the regulars you’d expect. As someone with a big appetite, this meal was more than enough to fill me up and definitely deserves its title as a tried and tested classic.

The best steak sandwich in South Africa just might be here at the iconic Kentucky Milk Bar at 95 Central Rd Fordsburg. Claiming to be the oldest take-out joint in the area, the home of the legends preserves a bygone era where members of the community can still be found filling their bellies and exchanging the days gossip, an important touchpoint that’s become all too rare. Now, in its second generation, back in the day, the owner could be found watching cricket behind the counter until 2 a.m., serving food to hungry movie goers who would come in between double features. Today the area has changed a great deal, but the food hasn’t, which is probably why they’ve lasted since the 60’s. Run today by Mohammed, who can be found at the store every day, a friendly man proud of his families heritage. The classic steak sandwich is simple. Steak, chips, masala, and cheese toasted to perfection. If it’s not the best, tell me know where I’m going next.

I’m Nick Hamman, and today I’m chowing with England's least favorite prop, the legendary Retshegofaditswe 'Ox' Nché. A springbok warrior deserves an epic meal, and so I brought him to one of my favorite places, The Kitchen of Oz in Emmarentia, and asked them to whip up something special. Never disappointing, they made a Smokey Rump Roll. 200g flame grilled BBQ style Rump steak topped with low and slow smoked brisket. Garnished with red onion and their in-house pickled mustard.

If you want an awesome steak rounder, you need to come to Fordsburg, Johannesburg, and pay a visit to one of the original Akalwayas fast food outlets. Coming from the Oriental Plaza, you take a left on Barney Simon and Central Street and stop just before you arrive at Solly’s Corner.

I’m Nick Hamman and SuperSportBet has challenged me to find the best place to watch the game in South Africa and today your comments have sent me to Kyalami Shisanyama in Johannesburg to watch Pirates take on Mamelodi Sundowns in the final of The Nedbank Cup. Priding themselves on delicious South African food and good music, the setting for the match was proper with a giant outdoor big screen, allowing everyone to get stuck into the vibe. The crucial fuel for this high-pressure attacking game came with all the classics. Going for the something meaty platter, which more than fed two of us, with leftovers currently still sitting in my fridge that I’ll demolish later, we got 400-gram chuck, 2 wors, wings, 400-gram ox livers, pap, chakalaka and spinach for R490. With the game ultimately ending 2 -1 in favor of the Buccaneers, I found myself having an outstanding experience of food and football, which Id rate at 9 out of 10, but if Kyalami Shisanyama is not the best place to watch the…

I’m Nick Hamman and I might have just found the best smoked meat in South Africa, here in Chiawelo in Soweto at Something Smoked Roadhouse BBQ. The brainchild of Mpho, an entrepreneurial South African who trained in Steelwork, but after being retrenched started making his own furniture, which eventually led to him making a smoker and as they say, the rest is history. Self-taught and always learning, Mpho is deeply passionate about the art of smoking meat, with some of his offerings like the brisket taking up to 16 hours to prepare. I got to sample beef cheeks, braised in lard, cheese and pork sausages, chicken, Mexican street corn, mac and cheese and beans mixed with broth from the brisket. Currently operating out of his grandmother’s house and running only over weekends, Mpho has plans to expand his business, with dreams of one day opening his own premises. Smoking meat is to me and artform and Something Smoked Roadhouse BBQ 100% know what they’re doing, brining out…

If you want to eat delicious, traditional South African 7 colors styled food, you need to come to Sakhumzi on the historic Vilakazi Street in Orlando West, Soweto. The only street in the world where once two Nobel Peace Prize laureates lived, it's worth noting it is very touristy, but still very much worth a visit. Sakhumzi offers a buffet for R250 where you’ll find beetroot, chakalaka, pap, samp, cabbage, gravy, trotters, chicken, beef stew, mogodu and more. I’d highly recommend checking Sakhumzi out, but if it’s not the best place to get traditional, local South African food, you need to let me know in the comments where I’m going next.

I’m Nick Hamman and if you want to eat food prepared by the man who cooked for Nelson Mandela, as well as Thabo Mbkei, you should visit Andile Somdaka at Eziko in Johannesburg. I’ve spent Heritage Month travelling South Africa on my 5FM Breakfast Show, tasting amazing experiences around SA and this was definitely a highlight.

I'm Nick Hamman and I’m looking for the best Chisa Nyama in South Africa and today your comments have sent me to Braamfontein, a popular student area in Joburg to try out ZigNy and Braai. With all the classics you’d expect, you pick out your selection of meat and watch as it’s braai'd outside, while you select your choice of sides and take in the bustle of students and passers by in an exciting and energetic part of town. In terms of value for money, this spot has my vote. R75 for a full plate which came with tender steak, juicy wors, hot pap, fresh chakalaka and spicy atchar, together with a delicious, mild relish. Honestly, everything was fantastic and I can tell why you guys asked me to come to this spot. I’ve left the address in the caption and would highly recommend paying ZigNy and Braai a visit, but if it's not the best Chisa Nyama in South Africa, you need to let me know in the comments where I’m going next.

I’M Nick Hamman and I’ve just had one of the most incredible culinary experiences I’ve had in a while, here at Kwa Coach in Pimville. Seriously guys, this is one to save. Run by Coach himself, the business has been going for the last 8 years. Before this, he was a tow truck driver that was forced to create opportunities for himself after being retrenched. Decided to turn to what he knew best, he went into the family business. Everything I ate was absolutely excellent and incredibly well priced. The pork head you saw goes for R180. The beef ribs are R100 and the Pork ribs go for R90, the liver was R40, the neck R60, the cows heart and the wors, all with pap included, cost R40 each. Coach is running an operation where they clearly know what they’re doing, with the staff arriving at 6am and the doors opening at 8 in the morning and operating until 8pm on weekdays and on 10pm over the weekend. The food was any delicious adjective you can think of, juicy, succulent, tender,…

I’m Nick Hamman and I’m looking for the best breakfast in Soweto and I may have just found it, here at Sleez Oceanic in the suburb of Mofolo, but to explain to you why eating this meal almost brought me to tears, I need to wind back the hands of time by about a year when I got a DM from Slee inviting me to come and try her seafood boil. Always eager to support local business, I made the trip out to find a young, entrepreneurial woman, working tirelessly out of her aunt’s home to create delicious seafood in a part of the world where it wasn’t common. One of the biggest takeaways from my visit was Slee telling me of her dreams to open her own spot one day. After my visit, the video went viral and you guys did what you do best, supporting the business in serious numbers. This led to a journey which comes full circle today as Slee has expanded not only her menu, including the famous seafood, pastas and a delicious breakfast menu, but also her spot, opening this beautiful restaurant…
