If you want to try a legend of South African fast food, you need to come to Akhalz in Norwood and experience The Wonder Why Pizza. An offshoot of the iconic Akhalwaya's, Akhalz is connected to one of the longest-standing institutions of fast food in the country, and in short, they know what they’re doing. This pizza is loaded with steak, cheese, chips, and palony, smothered in sauce, and blasted in a giant pizza oven before being served piping hot to customers for only R45. In addition to this famous pizza, they do samosas, a specialty of Lebanese flatbread, and the regulars you’d expect. As someone with a big appetite, this meal was more than enough to fill me up and definitely deserves its title as a tried and tested classic.

Juicy, filling and flavorful and requiring a good amount of effort to hold together, I’d definitely come back to try out more of the food. Despite the heartbreaking 24 – 25 one-point loss to Ireland, I thought the game was…
